Olson Nets First Collegiate Goal in Win Over Wildcats

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel picked up their first win of the season as they hosted the Wildcats of Penn College on the hill.

On a muggy Sunday afternoon, both teams battled early without a clear advantage from either side. Then after about 10 minutes of play, the Green Terror started to impose their will on the Wildcats. Sophomore AJ Nordone turned his defender and ripped a shot just outside the box that was saved by the Wildcats keeper Cole Catherman. In the 12th minute he had another opening on a fast break, but Catherman was there again.

Graduate goalie Austin Heid made a pair of saves early on in the half, but the McDaniel defense led by Matt Bowes and Jared Edge locked up the Wildcats offense. As the half continued, the play became more physical. Edge and Jake Kegley picked up yellow cards for the Green Terror, but were still able to keep Penn College in check.

Coming out of halftime, Penn College returned the favor with aggressive defense that resulted in their second yellow card of the game. In the 56th minute Carver Neary controlled a cross in the box, but could not get a shot off. The Wildcats pushed the ball back into McDaniel territory, but Tyler Reid stepped in front of a pass and dished it to a streaking Nordone down the far sideline. Nordone then crossed it over the defense to freshman Charlie Olson just outside the box. Olson made a move just as the goalie came out to contest, then placed it far post for the first goal of his career.

Leading by one, McDaniel continued to press the advantage. Jorge Herrera had two shots that were blocked by the defense, and freshman AJ Reta got behind the defense on multiple runs. Penn College mustered just one shot in the second half right after the McDaniel goal, but it sailed wide right. Heid picked up his second shutout of the season and ninth of his McDaniel career.

McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday against Marywood. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at the McDaniel Soccer Complex.
