WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College field hockey held No. 15 Ursinus scoreless for the first 36 minutes before two second-half goals carried the Bears to a 2-0 victory Friday night at Gill Stadium.
Highlighted by eight saves from freshman
Lora Scarangello, the Green Terror (2-7, 0-3 CC) held Ursinus to just two goals on 22 shots and 24 penalty corners.
Scarangello faced 15 shots and 13 penalty corners in the first half and totaled seven of her eight saves to keep the second-ranked scoring offense in the Centennial Conference scoreless through the first 30 minutes.
The McDaniel defense limited the Bears to just seven shots in the second half, but Ursinus finally broke through six minutes into the third quarter off its third consecutive penalty corner when Marie Brainard struck for her third goal of the season.
The Bears totaled two more shots and four penalty corners over the final 10 minutes of the quarter, but the Green Terror defense was up to the task, blocking one shot before Scarangello turned away the second to keep their deficit at one.
McDaniel registered its first shot on goal three minutes into the fourth quarter, but an attempt by senior
Emma Legacy was kicked away by Adriana Palladinetti for her only save of the game. On the ensuing transition, Ursinus added an insurance tally when Mary Lauren Franz scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Bears would keep up the pressure, totaling two shots that were blocked by the Green Terror defense and four consecutive penalty corners. McDaniel finished the game with three-straight penalty corners in the final 27 seconds, but could not register a shot before time expired.
The Green Terror continue their four-game home stand next Wednesday, Oct. 4 when they welcome Dickinson. Game time is at 7 p.m.
