READING, Pa. - The McDaniel College volleyball team opened up its season with a pair of wins over Albright and Bryn Athyn on Saturday in a tri-match inside Albright's Bollman Center.
McDaniel 3, Albright 2 (20-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-16, 15-13)
In the first match, the Green Terror (2-0) took a quick two-point lead with kills by sophomore
Kailey Young and junior
Angalyn Strouse. Albright battled back and took the lead 4-3, but freshman
Hannah Waters made her collegiate debut and had three assists early to put the Green Terror back in front.
Both teams traded points until a four-point run by McDaniel, including a pair of kills from sophomore
Kenzie Mitchell. Albright retook the lead 18-17 and pulled away to win the first set, 25-20.
Waters responded for McDaniel in the second set with back-to-back service aces building a 4-1 lead. Trailing by six, Albright strung together six-straight points to tie the set at 8-8. Junior
Nia Roberts, who led the team with 12 kills, connected on a pass from
Waters to move the Green Terror in front.
McDaniel built the lead to 19-12, then freshman
Renita Bankole-Gibson recorded her third kill from
Waters who followed that up with an ace as the Green Terror claimed the second set, 25-18.
In a tightly contested third set, both teams made runs. Sophomore
Samantha Fadel had back-to-back aces early as McDaniel led 6-2. The Lions clawed back to retake the lead, 10-9. Albright kept up the pressure and led 20-15, but Roberts ended its run with a kill before
Kathy Taveras recorded a pair of aces to cut into the lead.
Trailing 23-22, Waters passed it to a leaping Young who connected on a kill to tie the set, but Albright responded with two-straight points to take the third set, 26-24.
As the fourth set began, McDaniel built a 16-9 lead, led by three kills from Young. The Green Terror kept their lead en route to a 25-16 win.
As the fifth and final set began, Young and freshman
Abigayle Bowley each had a pair of kills to put McDaniel ahead, 6-0. The Lions rallied and took a 9-7 lead. Junior
Ally Burgee tallied a kill to cap off three-straight points for the visitors before they pulled away for the five-set win, tallying the final point on including the final point on a kill by Young.
McDaniel 3, Bryn Athyn 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-20)
The Green Terror kept the momentum rolling into the second match. As the first set began, Fadel tallied four-straight aces to help build a 6-2 lead. Leading by 10, Roberts had two kills late to help give McDaniel a 13-point victory.
Mitchell led McDaniel with 11 kills while Waters tallied 16 assists.
The Green Terror took a big lead in the second set and never looked back, winning 25-13.
McDaniel also built a big lead early in the third. Leading 13-12, Roberts connected on a trio of kills to push the lead back to five. The team maintained that lead with a pair of aces from Burgee and pulled away for a 25-20 win.
The Green Terror travel to York (Pa.) on Wednesday to take on the Spartans. First serve is at The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
