WESTMINSTER, Md. - Led by sophomore
AJ Nordone, the McDaniel College men's soccer team struck early and often as it opened Centennial Conference play with a 4-1 victory over Ursinus Saturday at the Soccer Complex.
The Green Terror (3-0-3, 1-0-0 CC) extended their unbeaten streak to six, including 3-0-1 at home with their fourth win in the last five meetings against the Bears.
In six games this season, McDaniel has outscored its opponents, 9-2.
Less than a minute into the game, the Green Terror pushed the ball forward. Nordone created some space just outside the box, then connected on a shot that curled over the keeper into the far corner of the net to break the deadlock.
McDaniel continued the forward pressure and in the 13th minute, sophomore
Carver Neary sent a low cross into the box that deflected off the keeper towards freshman
Charlie Olsen who finished at the net to increase the lead to 2-0 with his second goal of the season.
Both teams battled in the midfield as the game remained physical throughout. Four total yellow cards were handed out during the match with each team receiving two.
Ursinus (4-1-0, 0-1-0 CC) had two real chances to score, but graduate goalkeeper
Austn Heid was there to make the save each time. The back line of the Green Terror defense led by juniors
Jared Edge and
Matt Bowes, kept the Bears from breaking through, constantly pressuring the Bear forwards into mistakes and bad passes.
Coming out of the locker room, Ursinus quickly cut into the lead with a goal from Colin Deal in the 59th minute. As McDaniel tried to regain momentum, sophomore
Jake Kegley brought the ball across midfield and and took a shot just outside the box, but it was blocked by the Ursinus defense.
The Green Terror kept the possession in the Ursinus half of the field until Bears defender Nick Balbierer closed too late and forced a McDaniel penalty kick in the 71st minute. Junior
Brandon Morse stepped up and calmly put the ball in the back of the net to put the Green Terror in front, 3-1.
Five minutes later, Nordone capitalized again for his second goal of the game to seal the victory for McDaniel.
McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts a non-conference contest against Gwynedd Mercy beginning at 4 p.m.
