Nordone, Conte Lead Men's Soccer in 1-1 Tie With Griffins

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College men's soccer sophomore AJ Nordone scored for the second-straight game as the team battled Gwynedd Mercy to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday at the Soccer Complex.

The Green Terror (3-0-4), ranked at No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches Region V rankings on Tuesday, remained unbeaten in seven games this season, including five at home.

McDaniel led for most of the contest, scoring in the 13th minute before the Griffins got the equalizer in the 56th and withstood a barrage of shots to escape with a draw.

Nordone scored his third goal off the season, all in the last two games, off a rebound in front after a shot from freshman Charlie Olsen deflected off a defender.

The Green Terror finished with just two first-half shots, but a strong back line, headlined by freshman goalkeeper Gianluca Conte who was making his second start, held the Griffin offense in check.

Gwynedd Mercy (1-3-2) gained control to start the second half, taking advantage of a long pass behind the defense. Kasey Wallace took two short dribbles on a breakaway before sending a shot past the outstretched arms of Conte to tie the game at 1-1 in the 57th minute.

Both teams battled near midfield for the next stretch of the match. McDaniel had a few chances, but were unable to connect.

In the 77th minute, Griffins defender Braedon Kehan picked up a red card, leading to a man advantage for the remaining 13 minutes for the Green Terror. McDaniel pushed forward, but a shot from freshman AJ Reta was saved by the keeper to keep the game tied.

A few minutes later, three players had an opportunity to score for the Green Terror, but neither could find the back of the net before time expired in a chippy contest that saw four yellow cards and one red.

McDaniel returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday when it travels to Washington College. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
