ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Led by 26 digs from junior
Kathy Taveras, the McDaniel College volleyball team posted a four-set road win over St. Mary's (Md.) in a non-conference contest Tuesday at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
The Green Terror (6-1) took control early against the Seahawks, winning the first two sets.
St. Mary's took an early lead in the first set with two early kills. Sophomore
Kenzie Mitchell got McDaniel on the board with a kill from freshman
Hannah Waters who led the team with 14 assists.
Both teams battled through the middle of the set before Mitchell and freshman
Renita Bankole-Gibson blocked a St. Mary's attempt to tie the score at 11-11. After three errors by the Seahawks, senior
Tatiana Hamilton found junior
Allyson Burgee to stretch the lead to five. Mitchell and Waters each had a pair of kills as the Green Terror finished off the first set with a 25-19 win.
McDaniel got behind in the second set, but clawed its way back into it with kills from Mitchell, senior
Nia Roberts, and sophomore
Kailey Young. Leading 13-12, the Green Terror went on a six-point run to build a lead. St. Mary's rallied and cut the lead to two until Roberts and junior
Angalyn Strouse converted on kills to seal a 28-26 victory.
The third set featured 10 ties and remained close throughout. The Seahawks (2-7) stayed ahead by two until scoring a pair of points to pull away and win 25-21.
St. Mary's continued their run into the fourth set, but McDaniel tied it with a four-point serving run from freshman
Reese Beck. Sophomore
Samantha Fadel picked up her second ace of the game to extend the Green Terror lead to four.
Kills by Young and Bankole-Gibson kept the visitors in front until the Seahawks stormed back to tie the set at 20-20. Both teams traded points until Burgee and Waters smashed two kills to close out the set and the match, 25-22.
Fadel added 21 digs while Hamilton finished with 11 assists.
McDaniel returns to action on Friday at 7 p.m. against Wilson in the second match of the Green Terror Classic.
