Two Second-Quarter Goals Carry Field Hockey to Victory

ASHLAND, Va. - The McDaniel College field hockey team scored two goals just one minute apart in the second quarter to rally for a 2-1 road win over Randolph-Macon Friday in the team's season opener at Nunnally Field.

The Green Terror (1-0) improved to 3-0 in their last three season openers, outscoring their opponents, 12-1.

After the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead with 7:00 remaining in the second quarter, senior Yeseniah Ortiz tallied the equalizer off an assist from junior Tori McArthur with 4:46 to play. It was the sixth career goal for Ortiz and the first career assist for McArthur.

McDaniel would net the eventual game-winner just over a minute later when senior Emma Legacy scored on a feed from senior Olivia Vanreusel with 3:45 left. Legacy netted her fourth career goal and third game-winner while Vanreusel picked up her first career point.

Leading 2-1 at the half, the Green Terror would hold Randolph-Macon without a shot over the final 30 minutes as freshman Lora Scarengello picked up the win in her first career start in goal. McDaniel out-shot the Yellow Jackets 7-3 while fending off nine penalty corners, including five in the second half.

The Green Terror have won the last three meetings with Randolph-Macon, including both match-ups at Nunnally Field.

McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 6 when it hosts local rival Stevenson in its home opener inside Gill Stadium beginning at 6 p.m.
