WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College field hockey team allowed just nine shots, but Stevenson scored two goals off penalty corners en route to a 2-0 victory Wednesday night at Gill Stadium.
All 12 meetings between the Green Terror (1-1) and the Mustangs since 2009 have been decided by two goals or less.
After a scoreless first quarter in which Stevenson registered the only shot, the Mustangs scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with just 1:14 remaining until halftime when Rylee Leakway scored off an assist from Emma Gladstein on a penalty corner. Gladstein had the injection to Leakway from the backline to the top of the circle where she took one touch inside the arc and blasted a shot to the far corner for her second goal of the season.
Stevenson (2-1) led 1-0 at the half, outshooting McDaniel, 5-2. Freshman
Lora Scarangello had two saves in goal while the Mustangs had two, including a defensive save by Haley Palmer on a shot by junior
Madge Myers with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter.
The third quarter was uneventful until the five-minute mark when Stevenson earned its second penalty corner. In a carbon copy of their second-quarter goal, Gladstein connected with Leakway for another blast from the top of the circle with 4:50 remaining.
McDaniel earned three fourth-quarter penalty corners, but could not find the back of the net as its lone shot by junior
Tenley Pelot was saved by Jordan Vradenburgh with just over five minutes to play.
Scarangello finished with three saves for the Green Terror.
McDaniel begins a three game road trip on Saturday when it heads to Elizabethtown. Game time is at noon.
