WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College men's soccer team opened its 2023 campaign against Immaculata on Friday, battling the visitors to a scoreless tie at the Soccer Complex.
The Green Terror (0-0-1) controlled possession for most of the match, but were unable to find the back of the net. The defense showed up and locked down the Mighty Macs offense over the course of 90 minutes, giving up just two shots in the second half.
In an evenly played first half, both teams played around the midfield line with very few openings. In the 12th minute, sophomore
Jake Kegley ripped a shot from outside the box which was saved by the Immaculata keeper. A minute later, the Mighty Macs took their first shot, but graduate student
Austin Heid was in position for the save.
McDaniel had a pair of shots in the 23rd minute that were saved.
In the 36th minute,
Heid had his best save of the game, leaping up and snagging a shot towards the top right corner of the goal. Sophomore
Conor Najera checked into the game and almost connected on a header just before the half.
McDaniel controlled the second half with multiple runs by behind the defense. Freshman
AJ Reta and sophomore
Carver Neary had multiple chances throughout, but the Mighty Macs' Ryan Straub was always in position to make the save.
The Green Terror out-shot Immaculata 9-2 over the final 45 minutes. As time wound down, the game saw four total yellow cards given out, including three on the visitors.
With under five minutes to play, junior
Jared Edge dribbled into the box and was fouled by Straub which led to a penalty kick for the Green Terror. However, the shot was wide and contest ultimately ended in a draw as the NCAA moved to its no regular season overtime format in 2022.
McDaniel returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Penn College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
