Five Student-Athletes Contend For Charles W. Havens Award

WESTMINSTER, Md. - On Wednesday, May 17, the McDaniel College Athletic Department will hold its annual senior celebration in the Naganna Forum inside the Roj Student Center.

Each year, the department honors four major award winners with the Dr. H. Samuel Case '63 Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, the Charles W. Havens Award, the Faith Millard/Dr. Carol Fritz Medal Endowed Fund, and The John A. Alexander Medal.

Over the next two days leading up to Wednesday's celebration, athletics will recognize the nominees for each of the four awards with the winners being announced and awarded their medals at the Senior Investitures and Honors Convocation on Friday, May 19.

The next nominees are for the Charles W. Havens Award. Established in 1981 by the 1951 undefeated football team in honor of Charles W. Havens '30, it is presented to a graduating senior, male or female, who has participated in intercollegiate athletics and who has shown, by word and deed, the attributes of charity, altruism, benevolence, and a humane and compassionate concern for others.

A team captain this season, Abby Doff is a four-year member of the field hockey team who will graduate with a degree in social work. She made it a point to spend time with teammates when they were feeling down and also write encouraging messages to them. In addition, she currently works in a group residential home with three ladies who have a variety of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Brianna Guarnieri is a team captain and four-year member of the women's soccer team. A member of the 2021 Centennial Conference champions, she was also named to the 2022 Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team and recipient of the Ralph B. Price Scholarship which is awarded for academic performance in economic department courses, overall academic achievement and characteristics in intellectual curiosity, humane manner, love of the College community, and caring for others.

Guarnieri has served as a peer tutor and volunteer for Special Olympics, Tournament of Champions and the Seventh Inning Stretch program. She also wrote and sent Valentine's Day cards to children in local hospitals.

Acadia Noll played in four seasons on the women's lacrosse team, appearing in all 43 of the team's games while making 41 starts and earning All-Centennial Conference Second Team honors in 2022. She planned and managed a garden, weeding, watering, harvesting, and distributing 600-plus pounds of produce to the local community and served as a Community Service Coordinator and STEM Center Learning Assistant as well as an Environmental Mentor with the Howard County Conservancy. She will graduate with a degree in environmental studies with a specialization in policy and management.

A four-year member of the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field teams, Anthony Razze will graduate with a degree in accounting and business administration. He has been President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, worked with college alumni through the advisory board and attended international leadership programs, participated in Tournament of Champions and in the Street Cleaners Club helping to beautify Westminster's Main Street and strengthen McDaniel's connection to the local community.

Razze is a nominee for the Bates Prize which is awarded to the graduating senior who has made the best record during their undergraduate course as well as for the Lynn F. Gruber Medal which is given to a member of the graduating class for proficiency in extracurricular activities. This year, he earned two All-Centennial Conference Second Team selections, indoors and outdoors, as a member of the 4x400-meter relay. He also earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors indoors.

Gage Souder played two seasons on the men's soccer team in 2021 and 2022, appearing in 32 of the team's 33 games while making 31 starts. He was the 2022 recipient of the Philip E. and Ruth Shreeve Uhrig Green and Gold Soccer Achievement Award that exhibits the highest degree of excellence in sportsmanship, team spirit and enjoyment of the game, tenacity in play and superior skill, and a consuming desire to win coupled with an ability to lose graciously. A participant in the annual Tournament of Champions, he will graduate with a degree in kinesiology.

The nominees for the Faith Millard/Dr. Carol Fritz Medal Endowed Fund and The John A. Alexander Medal will be announced on Tuesday.
