WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College baseball team pitching staff limited the Washington College offense to just four runs on five hits as the team picked up its fifth conference win of the season Tuesday at Preston Field, 6-4.
The Green Terror (17-16-1, 5-9 CC) allowed just one run on two hits over the final five innings, snapping an eight-game losing streak against the Shoremen, including a three-game skid at home.
Freshman
Gannon Williams got the start for McDaniel and delivered by putting down the first three hitters he faced. Washington was able to strike first with an unearned run off an error in the second, but Williams made it through 4.0 innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out two.
Trailing by one, the Green Terror responded with two runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, senior
Austin Goudeaux drew his team-leading 30th walk of the season before senior
Hunter Kelly reached first after being hit-by-pitch. Senior
Connor Uhrig ripped a single down the first baseline to score Goudeaux and Kelly would follow on a sacrifice fly by senior
Billy Wheatley to give the team its first lead.
Williams retired the next three batters he faced to keep McDaniel in front, but the Shoremen (12-24, 2-13 CC) responded with two runs in the fourth to retake the lead.
However, McDaniel had an answer once again with three runs in the bottom of the inning as Goudeaux led off with a single and then scored on a triple from Kelly to tie the game at 3-3.
Uhrig picked up his second RBI of the game on a sac fly to score Kelly before junior
Tyler Yohn singled through the left side to drive in Wheatley and put the Green Terror ahead by two.
The combination of junior
Remy Mangum, sophomore
Max Vener, and freshman
Dylan Parsons shut down any chances for Washington to make a comeback as the trio held the visitors scoreless over the final five innings.
The Green Terror defense also came up with key plays to help preserve the lead. In the top of the fifth, the Shoremen ripped a ball up the middle that deflected off Mangum's hand, but senior
Joey Hubinger quickly reacted and caught the deflection before tossing it to first for the double play.
Uhrig drove in his third run of the game with his second sac fly in the bottom of the seventh before Parsons entered in the top of the ninth with a runner on first and no outs, retiring the first three batters he faces to earn his second save of the season.
Yohn finished 2-for-4 with a walk and on RBI while Uhrig went 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Goudeaux was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
With the weather forecast for this weekend, McDaniel will now host Ursinus on Thursday for senior day beginning at noon. The Green Terror and Shoremen are scheduled to conclude their three game series on Friday in Chestertown, Md.
