WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College baseball team battled back from a five-run deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Gettysburg scored two runs in the top of the 10th to escape Preston Field with a 10-8 victory on Friday.
The Green Terror (15-12, 3-5 CC) totaled 17 hits, one shy of their season high, but allowed 18, including four in the top of the 10th as they fell for the first time in three extra-inning contests this season.
Led by two home runs from senior
Connor Uhrig, McDaniel totaled five extra-base hits and had six players post multi-hit games. Uhrig went 2-for-5 with three RBIs while senior
Joey Hubinger was 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs.
After the Bullets (16-13, 3-5 CC) took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Green Terror scored two in the bottom of the second to take their only lead of the game on a two-run homer by Uhrig.
Gettysburg responded with six runs on six hits in the top of the third as the visitors sent 12 batters to the plate to take their largest lead, 7-2.
However, McDaniel got some strong pitching from its bullpen and began to chip away the deficit, getting three runs back in the bottom of the third on a two-run triple by Hubinger and an RBI-single from junior
Jake Smith to trim the Bullet lead to 7-5 after three.
On the mound, freshman
Gannon Williams turned in his best outing of the season, scattering six hits and allowing just one walk and one earned run while striking out four over a season-long 4.0 innings.
Each team plated a run in the fifth to keep the lead at two, but Uhrig's second home run pulled the Green Terror within one in the sixth before an RBI-single by senior
Austin Goudeaux in the seventh, tied the game at 8-8.
After back-to-back scoreless innings, Gettysburg had four consecutive, one-out singles in the top of the 10th, scoring the second run on the fourth RBI of the day from Jack Pistner. The top three batters in the order for the Bullets went a combined 8-for-14 with seven RBIs.
With a two-run lead, James Wheedon retired McDaniel in order in the bottom of the inning to pick up his third win in four decisions this season. He allowed just two hits over the final 3.0 innings while striking out five of the 11 batters he faced.
Despite not allowing a hit in the eighth and ninth and striking out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth, junior
Remy Mangum suffered his third loss of the season.
Smith was 3-for-4 with one RBI while junior
Tyler Yohn also had three hits. Goudeaux finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
On Sunday, McDaniel will travel to Haverford for a Centennial Conference doubleheader that was rescheduled from Saturday due to potential weather. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
