WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College baseball team opened Centennial Conference on Saturday with a doubleheader split at home against Muhlenberg on Preston Field.
The Green Terror (13-8, 1-1 CC) picked up their seventh home win of the season, exploding for 15 runs on 18 hits in the opener before the second game was called due to weather after six innings and the Mules leading 5-3.
Senior
Connor Uhrig launched a home run in both games along while senior
Austin Goudeaux and senior
Joey Hubinger each had solo shots in game one.
The Mules (8-12-1, 1-1 CC) took game two with a 5-3 lead through six innings as the game was delayed then finalized due to weather.
McDaniel 15, Muhlenberg 8
The Mules (8-12-1, 1-1 CC) got on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning. Freshman
Ben Davis was up second and singled into left field. After a single from
Tyler Yohn, junior
Jake Smith laced a double into the gap scoring both runners. Smith tallied three RBI's in the first game. With Smith on base, Goudeaux stepped up to the dish and connected on his first home run of the year.
With McDaniel leading by four, the Mules answered right back with a three-run homer by Brendan Hughes.
In the fourth inning with the score tied at six, freshman
Tyson Nercessian relieved
Ryan Martino and proceeded to lockdown the Mules over the next four innings.
Nercessian faced 20 batters and recorded three strikeouts while giving up just four hits.
The potent Green Terror offense struck again in the bottom of the fourth with RBIs from
Hunter Kelly and
Billy Wheatley respectively. Uhrig
came to the plate next and sent one over the fence for a two-run blast. McDaniel led 12-6 after four innings of play.
McDaniel added three more runs and freshman
Dylan Parsons closed out the Mules with three-straight putouts.
Muhlenberg 5, McDaniel 3
In the second game of the double header, Muhlenberg started Jayden Barroqueiro and he was able to find more success against the McDaniel offense. Barroqueiro went six innings and gave up three runs while recording 11 strikeouts. As the game entered the later innings, the Green Terror bats started to wake up. Hubinger went yard for his first home run of the season. Uhrig stayed hot with another deep shot over Preston Field fence.
Ryan Kelly started the game for McDaniel and threw two shutout innings to open the game. The Mules struck first with an RBI-single from Caleb Tereska.
Hubinger responded in the bottom half of the inning with a home run over the right field fence.
Muhlenberg added two more runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Trailing by two, Wheatley singled to right field with the tying run coming up next. Uhrig stepped up to the plate and bashed his second home run of the game to tie it up.
The Mules rallied once again and built another two-run lead in the fifth inning. Barroqueiro held the McDaniel offense in check through the sixth inning, when the game was paused due to lightning in the area.
McDaniel returns to action on Tuesday at Dickinson. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
