SALISBURY, Md. - The Green Terror competed against the No.2 ranked Sea Gulls in a tightly contested matchup. McDaniel out hit Salisbury, but could not overcome and early deficit.
The Sea Gulls (18-3) opened the game with senior Jackson Balzan who finished with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. McDaniel (12-7) was able to create scoring opportunities against Balzan with five hits including an RBI single from
Billy Wheatley in the fourth inning. Freshman
Tyson Nercessian made his sixth appearance of the year for the Green Terror and pitched three solid innings against the potent Salisbury offense.
In the bottom of the first inning, after a double from Luke Weddell, Salisbury got on the board first. The Green Terror struggled to get anything going on offense the first time through the lineup, but in the top of the fourth they were able to create an opportunity.
Senior
Austin Goudeaux was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a single by
Hunter Kelly into left field.
Wheatley came up next for McDaniel and laced one through the left side of the infield, scoring
Goudeaux.
Salisbury extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with two hits off
Ryan Kelly who had come in for
Nercessian the previous inning.
Dylan Parsons and
Matt Speakman also pitched for McDaniel.
Trailing by six heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Green Terror offense started to connect against Sea Gulls pitcher Brandon Epstein.
Todd Calhoun singled to center field advancing
Conor Uhrig to second.
Joey Hubinger came up to next and ripped one up the middle scoring
Uhrig.
After a wild pitch advanced
Hubinger and
Calhoun to second and third base,
Ben Davis flied out to left field allowing
Calhoun to tag up and score.
Jake Smith stepped up to the plate and roped one into right field to add another run. With McDaniel trailing 7-3,
Goudeaux followed
Smith with an RBI single through the infield to draw within three.
The Sea Gulls responded with a big bottom half of the inning to stretch the lead back to six. The Green Terror were unable to close the gap over the final two innings and fell to Salisbury 10-4.
McDaniel opens up Centennial Conference play on Saturday with a double header against Muhlenberg at home. The first game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
