Baseball Erupts for 23 Runs Against New England College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The McDaniel College baseball team used a pair of seven-run innings to beat New England College at Pelicans Ballpark in the last game of the spring break trip for the Green Terror.

Tyler Yohn tallied five RBIs on three hits, including a two-run homer to left field. Hunter Kelly and Billy Wheatley both added four RBI's each on a day when the Green Terror tallied 18 hits against New England College.

Junior Remy Mangum got his first start of the season for McDaniel. After giving up a single by the lead off hitter, he put down the next two hitters, then struck out the final batter of the inning. Austin Goudeaux opened the second inning with a double to left field. After a wild pitch put Goudeaux on third, Kelly sent a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Goudeaux.

Mangum held the Pilgrims scoreless in the second, adding another strikeout.

Joey Hubinger led off the third inning with one of his four hits before Yohn stepped into the box with one out on the board. Yohn waited for his pitch, then smashed a curve ball deep over the left field fence for his first home run of the year.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pilgrims took advantage of a few McDaniel fielding errors to retake the lead 4-3.

The Green Terror responded right away in the top of the fifth inning. Yohn and Ben Davis both singled to put two on for McDaniel. Goudeaux was hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out. Kelly then got hit-by-pitch to bring in the tying run.

Later that inning, with two outs, freshman Todd Calhoun ripped an RBI-single to left to scoring Goudeaux. Hubinger then followed with a two-run single to score Wheatley and Kelly and extend the Green Terror lead to six.

The hit was the 100th of Hubinger's career, making him the 23rd member of the team's 100-hit club. He now has 102 hits, ranking him 22nd in school history.

New England College got back in the game with a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning, but could not muster anymore offense the rest of the way.

McDaniel kept adding runs to the board, and in the top of the eighth inning with a comfortable lead, right fielder Connor Uhrig connected on a three-run shot to left field for the second home run of the day.

The Green Terror closed out their spring break trip with a 4-2 record.

McDaniel returns to action on Saturday against when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader versus Hood at Preston Field. First pitch in game one is scheduled for noon.
