Baseball Splits With Cairn in First-Ever Meeting

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The McDaniel College baseball team pulled away in extra innings for the win against Cairn in game one, but couldn't catch the Highlanders after they scored seven runs in the first three innings of game two.

The Green Terror (8-6) have won three of their five games in Myrtle Beach, outscoring opponents 40-12 in its three wins.

Senior Austin Goudeaux reached base five times in eight plate appearances, going 4-for-7 with one walk, three runs and two stolen bases.

McDaniel 11, Cairn 9

Freshman Dylan Parsons got the start for McDaniel and made quick work of Cairn in the first inning with two strikeouts before senior Joey Hubinger scored on an RBI-ground out by junior Jake Smith to put the Green Terror on the board in the bottom of the inning.

Goudeaux led off the bottom of the second with a single to left before scoring on an errant throw by the Cairn catcher after stealing third.

After singles from Hubinger and junior Santino DeFilippo, freshman Ben Davis popped up down the left field line. The shortstop lost the ball in the sun, and the dropped fly led to two unearned runs to push the McDaniel lead to 4-0.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the third, the Highlanders started to climb back into the game with a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly to pull within one.

Sophomore Max Vener, who made his second appearance of the year, came in for Parsons in the bottom of the fourth and calmly retired the side to maintain the lead.

Davis led off the fifth for McDaniel with a double to deep center before a sacrifice fly by junior Tyler Yohn pushed the Green Terror lead back to two.

Sophomore Conor Henderson entered in the sixth with a runner on first. After walking the first batter he faced to put the tying run on first, he struck out the final two batters to keep McDaniel in front by two.

The Highlanders (1-6) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double before the Green Terror tagged what could have been the game-winning run out at home to force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, McDaniel exploded for five runs to take an 11-6 lead. Cairn scored three of its own in the bottom of the inning, but sophomore Hunter Darke managed to strand the game-tying runs in scoring position to preserve the win.

Hubinger went 2-for-4 with a walk and three stolen bases while Goudeaux was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Cairn 16, McDaniel 3

The second game started with Cairn scoring four runs in the top of the first. McDaniel responded in the bottom half with an RBI-single from Goudeaux that scored Davis, but the Green Terror offense was shutout over the next four innings while the Highlanders built an 8-1 lead.

Senior Billy Wheatley drew a bases loaded walk and senior Connor Uhrig had a sacrifice fly in the sixth, but it wasn't enough as Cairn plated eight runs over the final two innings to win going away.

Davis and Goudeaux each had a pair of hits while Wheatley had two walks in three plate appearances.

McDaniel concludes its spring break trip on Wednesday when it faces New England College at Pelicans Ballpark, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Single-A, Carolina League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m.
