Monn Becomes First Freshman All-American in Team History

ROANOKE, Va. - After posting two wins on the first day of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Friday, McDaniel College wrestling freshman Thomas Monn secured the team's first All-America honor since 2016.

Monn became the 10th Green Terror to earn Division III All-America honors and the first since Ryan O'Boyle in 2016. He also became the first freshman to be named All-American in program history.

Ranked third in the nation at 149 pounds by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), Monn began his day by beating Averett's Hai Siu for the second time this season, recording a fall in the first overtime period in 7:48. Monn also recorded a fall against Siu in 4:45 back on Nov. 12.

Monn advanced to the national quarterfinals where he faced fourth-ranked Javen Estrada of North Central. After beginning his career with 34 consecutive wins, Monn suffered his first loss, losing to Estrada by major decision, 16-5.

However, Monn would bounce back with his ninth major decision of the season in the consolation bracket, posting a 12-3 decision over Clayton McDonough of Luther who was ranked fifth in the Lower Midwest Region in the latest NWCA rankings on Feb. 15.

The win assured Monn of at least an eighth-place finish at the national championships which guaranteed him All-America honors as the top-eight in each weight class are named All-American.

Monn, now 35-1 this season, is tied with Andrey Brener for eighth place on the school's single-season wins list. With a win on Saturday, he can move into a tie for fifth with Rodney Stine, Charlie Conaway and Ryker Eckenbarger.

Monn can finish no lower than eighth and as high as third as competition resumes on day two of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Saturday at 10 a.m. He faces eighth-ranked Charlie Stuhl of Augsburg in Saturday's morning session.
