WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College women's basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to cut the lead to two midway through the fourth quarter, but Swarthmore escaped with a 52-42 victory Thursday on Rebecca L. Martin Court.
The Green Terror (8-15, 6-12 CC) held the Garnet without a basket for a span of almost 11 minutes as they rallied from a 36-22 deficit at the start of the third quarter to cut it to 41-39 with 4:40 remaining in the fourth following a jump shot in the paint by freshman
Elaina Beckett.
McDaniel outscored Swarthmore 17-5, limiting the visitors to just 2-of-14 shooting while forcing nine turnovers. Beckett scored six of her eight points during the run while sophomore
Liliana Overcash added five and graduate student
Julia Ryan had four.
However, that would be as close as the Green Terror could get as the Garnet (10-12, 8-9 CC) scored 10 of the game's final 13 points, going 3-for-3 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
Ryan finished with her second-straight game in double digits, leading the team with 10 while going 3-for-6 from three-point range for the second consecutive game. She was the lone Green Terror in double digits as Overcash had nine points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
Senior
Josey Klingenberg totaled three points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals while graduate student
Meggie Burgess had seven points, five rebounds and three steals.
A slow start for McDaniel proved to be the difference as Swarthmore jumped out to a 20-10 lead after one. The two teams both scored 32 points over the final three quarters. The Garnet were 8-of-14 from the floor in the opening 10 minutes while the Green Terror were 3-of-15.
McDaniel returns to action next Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Gettysburg. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. Beckett scored a career-high 31 points as the Bullets edged out a 68-62 decision in the first meeting back on Nov. 29.
