WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College men's lacrosse sophomore
Jason Fritz scored six goals and graduate student
Brighton Lorber made 16 saves as the Green Terror beat Lycoming in their home opener Saturday at Gill Stadium, 11-9.
McDaniel (1-1) won its home opener for the second-straight season after a 12-8 victory over Messiah a year ago.
Fritz scored a career-high six goals, netting a hat-trick in each half, while adding an assist for a career-best seven points. He scored three of the team's first five goals as the Green Terror jumped out to a 5-1 lead with 9:12 remaining in the second quarter.
Led by a goal and assist from Owen Zimmerman and two assists rom Sean Farrell, the Warriors (0-2) scored three-straight to pull within one with 8:08 to play in the third.
Both teams scored back-to-back goals over the next five minutes before senior
Nick DeLoriers scored with just three seconds left in the quarter to push the Green Terror lead to two headed into the fourth.
DeLoriers bookended a 3-0 run as he scored again with 8:12 remaining in the fourth to give McDaniel its second four-goal advantage of the day, 10-6.
Lycoming scored two extra-man goals during a two-minute unreleasable penalty with 6:49 left and won 6-of-7 fourth quarter face-offs. However, Lorber made three of his seven fourth-quarter saves in the final five minutes and Fritz completed his sock trick with his sixth goal of the game with 4:32 to play as the Green Terror avenged last year's 5-4 road loss to the Warriors.
DeLoriers finished with two goals and one assist while junior
Dom Calderoni added two tallies. Senior
Cooper McCormick helped the defensive effort by totaling two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior
Jason Heeley won 10-of-17 face-offs and picked up three ground balls.
McDaniel continues its three-game homestand on Wednesday when it welcomes local rival Goucher to Gill Stadium. Face-off is at 4 p.m.
