No. 24 Wrestling Posts Best Conference Finish Since 2006

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Led by four individual champions and eight place winners, the McDaniel College wrestling team placed second at the 2023 Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships hosted by Ursinus on Saturday.

The 24th-ranked Green Terror posted their best finish at the conference championships since 2006 when they also finished second. McDaniel totaled 73.5 points, the most since the team totaled 76 in 2004.

In addition to winning four Centennial Conference championships, the Green Terror have finished as the runner-up seven times.

On Saturday, McDaniel had four wrestlers win individual titles, the most among the six participating schools. The team also had a second and third-place finisher while two others came in fourth. All four winners were first-time champions, including freshman Thomas Monn, senior Alex LaVeck, senior Michael Bromley and junior Jaedyn Harris.

At 149 pounds, Monn continued his undefeated season, improving his record to 29-0 with a major decision in the semifinals before posting his second decision over Merchant Marine's Edward Pinc in the last seven days in the final. Ranked third in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), Monn is the first McDaniel freshman since Bryan Hamper in 2003 to win a conference championship in his first season. That year, Hamper also won at 149 pounds.

LaVeck became the first champion at 165 pounds for the Green Terror since Tony Howard in 2006 when he pinned top-seeded Shawn Marchesano of Ursinus in 5:59. Marchesano is currently ranked sixth in the Mideast Region by the NWCA. LaVeck has 19 wins this season, including 13 by fall. For his career, he ranks third in program history with 43 pins.

Bromley went 3-0 at 184 pounds to capture his first individual championship after finishing second a year ago at 174. He is currently tied with Monn for the team lead in wins this season with 29 with 17 of those coming at 184 pounds where he is 17-1.

Harris gave McDaniel its fourth individual title with his second decision over Gettysburg's Brendan Loder in the last 10 days at 197 pounds, 4-1. Harris, ranked 19th nationally by The Open Mat and third in the Mideast Region by the NWCA, is 25-5 this season and 45-20 for his career at 197.

Sophomore Xavier Howard finished second at 157 pounds, advancing to the final with a 10-6 decision over Gettysburg's Heath Rudolph in which he recorded two takedowns in the final 20 seconds to break a 6-6 tie. He then fell to eighth-ranked Brandon Bowles of Muhlenberg in the final, 8-0.

Senior Alex DuFour finished third at 125 pounds, posting his second major decision over Dhilan Patel of Johns Hopkins, 19-7. DuFour has totaled 22 wins in a team-high 37 matches this season.

Junior Yoann Olympio and sophomore Val Pryor each recorded fourth-place finishes at 174 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. After making the jump from 184 and losing by major decision in his opening match, Pryor posted a 4-2 decision in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third-place bout.

The Green Terror return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Mideast Futures Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg.
