BALTIMORE, Md. - A strong defensive effort late in the fourth quarter carried Johns Hopkins to a 55-46 victory over
the McDaniel College women's basketball team Wednesday night at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
Led by two three-point plays from freshman
Elaina Beckett and senior
Mallory Conroy, the Green Terror (6-14, 4-11 CC) cut their deficit to four with 5:47 remaining.
However, the Blue Jays (15-4, 12-2 CC)Â did not allow a field goal over the final five minutes as McDaniel missed its final eight shots while turning the ball over twice.
The Green Terror jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the game's first three minutes and led 16-15 after one. Using an 11-0 run, Johns Hopkins took its first lead and led 26-19 with 3:44 to play in the second before stretching it to eight with 2:23 left.
McDaniel would battle back behind a 13-5 run that tied the game at 35-35, but the Blue Jays responded with 12 of the next 15 points to push their lead to nine before taking its largest advantage at 50-40 with 8:58 remaining in the fourth.
Despite the scoring drought, the Green Terror had opportunities in the fourth as they held Hopkins to just 3-of-15 shooting in the quarter. For the half, McDaniel was 9-of-29 from the floor while Hopkins was 9-for-28, but the Blue Jays were 7-of-10 from the free throw line while McDaniel had just three attempts.
Conroy matched her season-high with 16 points, equaling her output against Ursinus on Dec. 3, while Beckett finished with 14. Beckett also added eight rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore
Liliana Overcash had seven points and three assists with senior
Josey Klingenberg totaling four points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals.
The Green Terror look to get back on track when they host Bryn Mawr on Saturday. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. McDaniel posted a 73-41 victory over the Owls in the first meeting between the two teams on Nov. 19.
