Late Stop Lifts McDaniel to Third-Straight Conference Win

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College women's basketball team held off a late rally by Franklin & Marshall, highlighted by a defensive stop on the game's last possession in a 47-46 victory Saturday on Rebecca L. Martin Court.

The Green Terror (7-2, 3-2 CC) posted their third-straight win, all in the Centennial Conference, and improved to 5-1 at home this season. The team is off to its best start through nine games since the 2015-16 season when it also started 7-2.

The game featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes, including six ties and three lead changes in the second half.

McDaniel trailed by six, 39-33, with 5:52 remaining in the fourth quarter before a 14-2 run gave the team a six-point lead, 47-41, with 1:26 to play. During the run, five different players scored for the Green Terror, including juniors Lil Overcash and Jessica Weindoldt who had four points each.

However, two free throws and a banked in three-pointer pulled the Diplomats (3-5, 1-5 CC) within one with 43 seconds left. The Green Terror missed a jumper in the paint on their ensuing possession and after securing the offensive rebound, lost it on a held ball with 20 seconds remaining.

Franklin & Marshall missed an attempt to take the lead, but secured the rebound with two seconds to play. On the ensuing inbound, McDaniel was able to deflect the pass and the clock expired as it earned its second consecutive win against the Diplomats with both wins coming at home.

The Green Terror shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter, going 6-for-11, while limiting the visitors to 3-of-14 shooting.

Overcash finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Freshman Teya McConnaha totaled nine points, five rebounds, four steals and four blocks while freshman Raegan Lenz had seven points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.

McDaniel will take a break for finals before returning to action on the road at Hood on Tuesday, Dec. 19. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
