Men's Basketball Falls at Waynesburg in Season Opener, 64-52

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - A 16-4 run midway through the second half carried Waynesburg to a 64-52 victory over the McDaniel College men's basketball team in its season opener Wednesday night at Marisa Field House.

The Green Terror (0-1) fell for the first time in their last three season openers and fell to the Yellow Jackets in the first meeting between the two teams since Nov. 20, 1993.

In his first collegiate start, sophomore David Kearney posted his first career double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also added two blocks.

Sophomore Jonas Sujeta had a team-high 13 points while senior Chuck Contee added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Waynesburg (1-0) scored 38 points in the paint, including 24 in the second half. The team also shot 53.3 percent from the floor and were 13-of-17 from the free throw line while McDaniel was just 9-for-22.

A jumper by Kearney cut the Green Terror deficit to six, 42-36 with 12:00 remaining, before the Yellow Jackets scored 16 of the next 20 points to take their largest lead of the game, 58-40 with 4:08 to play.

During the run, McDaniel was 2-for-11 from the floor, 0-for-3 from the free throw line and had four turnovers.

The first half featured five ties and three lead changes and the Green Terror led 9-2 with 14:20 left following back-to-back baskets by Sujeta. With the game tied at 22-22, a free throw by Jordan McLoyd and a jumper by Antone Baker gave Waynesburg the lead for good as the team led 25-23 at halftime.

McDaniel makes its home debut on Saturday when it welcomes Notre Dame of Maryland to the Gill Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools as NDMU enrolled men for the fall 2023 semester for the first time after 127 years as primarily an all-women's undergraduate college.
