NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Junior
Jessica Weinoldt scored the game's lone goal in the 57th minute to send the McDaniel College women's soccer team to the NCAA second round with a 1-0 victory over Scranton Saturday night at host Christopher Newport.
The Green Terror (12-3-5) advance to the second round for the third time in five NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship appearances. They also advanced to the second round in 2016 and 2021.
Weinoldt netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season and her third game-winning goal after she converted a cross into the box from the right end line by junior
Liz LeChard. With her first assist of the season, LeChard has now been involved in five game-winning goals this season. She entered the game tied with Weinoldt with four goals, all game-winners.
McDaniel made the most of its opportunities as it was out-shot, 15-6. Junior
Lauren Hoolahan finished with eight saves, including five in the first half. She earned her 13th shutout in 20 starts this season. She is currently ranked third in the nation in shutouts, seventh in goals-against average and ninth in save percentage.
Scranton (13-4-3), the Landmark Conference champion, controlled the tempo early, totaling nine first-half shots while limiting the Green Terror to just three. However, McDaniel broke through on the first scoring opportunity of the second half as Weinoldt scored on a header in the goal box on the team's second and final shot on goal.
The Green Terror improved to 2-0 against the Royals, winning the first matchup between the two since a 2-1 win since Sept. 5, 2015 at the Gettysburg Cup.
McDaniel will face No. 1 Christopher Newport in the second round after the Captains posted a 7-0 victory over Marymount (VA) in Saturday's first game. In the first-ever match-up between the two a year ago, the teams battled to a scoreless draw at Virginia Wesleyan on Sept. 4, 2022. McDaniel entered the game ranked 19th while the Captains were No. 1 after winning the national championship in 2021.
