Women's Soccer Ends Season in NCAA Second Round at No. 1 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - No. 1 Christopher Newport scored two second-half goals to rally for a 3-2 victory at home over the McDaniel College women's soccer team Sunday night in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.

The Green Terror (12-4-5) finish the season with 12 wins for the eighth time in 11 seasons under head coach Sandy Lagana Bly. They also advanced to the second round for the third time in five NCAA tournament appearances under Bly.

McDaniel lost for the first time in five games this season when scoring at least two goals. The team was the first visitor in 10 games this season to score a goal against the Captains on their home field. CNU had outscored its opponents, 22-0 in the previous nine contests at Captains Field.

Christopher Newport (18-0-2) is unbeaten in its last 29 games at home dating back to a 1-0 loss to Mary Washington on Nov. 6, 2019. During that time, the Captains have outscored their opponents 73-8 while posting a 27-0-2 record. The Green Terror are the only team score multiple goals against them.

CNU jumped out to 1-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game when Kyleigh Gough scored her fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick. Three of the game's five goals were scored on PKs.

Just over nine minutes later, junior Liz LeChard scored on a free kick from just outside the box into the back left corner to tie the game in the 18th minute. It was her fifth goal of the season, all of which have tied or won the game for McDaniel.

With just 1:17 to play before halftime, Christopher Newport was whistled for a hand ball in the box, setting up a penalty kick for junior Jessica Weinoldt. The team's leading scorer this season gave the visitors the lead with a line drive to the bottom left corner just like LeChard to set a new career high in goals with six. Weinoldt is now 3-for-3 on PKs in her three-year career.

The goal marked the first time the Captains had trailed at home since the 63rd minute of a 1-1 tie with Salisbury back on Oct. 29, 2022.

The Green Terror held a one-goal lead at the half despite being out-shot, 15-4.

That changed quickly in the second when Christopher Newport was awarded its second penalty kick less than five minutes in. Hanna Heaton stepped and scored her team-leading seventh goal and first in two PK attempts this season.

With the game back to neutral, the Captains increased the pressure, totaling the game's next eight shots, four of which were blocked by the McDaniel defense and two that were saved by junior Lauren Hoolahan. However, CNU finally broke through in the 72nd minute as Corinne Kulik lofted a shot that deflected off the crossbar and in for what proved to be the game-winning goal, her first of the year.

The Green Terror had two attempts in the final seven-plus minutes, but both were turned away by Amy Sidway who finished with three saves in picking up her 14th win of the season.

Hoolahan totaled a career-high nine saves, including five in the first half as she surrendered more than one goal for the first time in 21 starts this season.

McDaniel is now 4-5 in five NCAA tournament appearances (2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2023).
