WESTMINSTER, Md. - Led by sophomore
Elaina Beckett and junior
Lil Overcash, the McDaniel College women's basketball team posted a convincing 67-48 victory over Chatham Saturday to win the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament.
The Green Terror (2-0) captured the title for the first time since the event was renamed in honor of former head coach Becky Martin in 2021. Furthermore, the team did so with Martin's 2003-04 team in attendance. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Centennial Conference championship, the team won a program record 25 games and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship.
Beckett and Overcash were named to the all-tournament team with Beckett earned MVP honors. In two games, she averaged 18.0 points and 13.5 rebounds, posting two double doubles and her sixth career 20-point game on Friday.
Meanwhile, Overcash averaged 11.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 54.5 percent from three-point range, going 6-for-11. She had 12 points and four rebounds on Saturday.
Beckett posted her 11th career double double with 14 points and 16 rebounds against the Cougars (1-1), totaling seven points and seven rebounds in the first half as McDaniel built a 37-17 halftime lead. Freshman
Raegan Lenz totaled eight points, four rebounds and three assists in the first 20 minutes while sophomore
Emily Lockard highlighted her birthday by also adding seven points, one shy of her career high.
Chatham was 6-for-33 from the floor in the first half, including 3-for-19 from three-point range. Led by Beckett, Lenz and freshman
Teya McConnaha who combined for 15 rebounds, the Green Terror out-rebounded the Cougars 28-16 and scored 16 of their 37 points in the paint. They also scored nine points off six Chatham turnovers.
McDaniel stretched its lead to as many 26 in the third quarter.
Lenz and McConnaha just missed their first career double doubles as Lenz finished with eight points and eight rebounds while McConnaha totaled nine points and eight rebounds. Junior
Peyton Tague added seven points, five assists and four rebounds.
The Green Terror continue their three-game home stand on Wednesday when they host a non-conference contest with York College of Pennsylvania beginning at 7 p.m.
