WESTMINSTER, Md. - Sophomore
Elaina Beckett totaled 22 points and 11 rebounds as the McDaniel College women's basketball team opened the 2023-24 season with a 63-51 victory over Eastern Mennonite Friday night inside the Gill Center.
The Green Terror (1-0) posted their third win in five games in the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament which was renamed in honor of the former head women's basketball coach prior to the 2021-22 season.
Beckett totaled her sixth career 20-point game and 10th double double as she was 9-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She also added three blocked shots.
After a stagnant opening quarter to the season for both teams where they combined for 19 points and shoot 26 percent, the level play improved in the second. Beckett scored eight of the team's 18 second-quarter points as McDaniel took a 28-26 halftime lead.
Junior
Lil Overcash led all scorers with 10 first-half points as she was 4-for-5 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. The Green Terror scored 16 of their 28 points in the paint as the game featured five ties and four lead changes.
The third quarter is where McDaniel put the game away, outscoring the Royals 22-10 to take a 14-point lead headed into the fourth. Beckett added 10 more points in the quarter on 5-of-6 shooting while freshman
Teya McConnaha added six to go along with two rebounds and two steals.
The Green Terror also scored 10 points off seven Eastern Mennonite turnovers while shooting 8-of-14 from the field and holding the Royals to just 3-of-15.
McDaniel led by as many as 18 points in the fourth following a layup by freshman
Ally Mathias as the team posted its second-straight home win and third in the last four dating back to last season.
The Green Terror will host Chatham in the championship game of the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. after the Cougars defeated Stevenson in Friday's second game, 73-56. Eastern Mennonite and Stevenson will meet in the consolation game beginning at 2 p.m.
