WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior
Liz LeChard scored her third goal of the season in the 53rd minute to give the McDaniel College women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over No. 8 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday at the Soccer Complex.
The Green Terror (9-2-5, 5-1-3 CC) have won all three games against nationally-ranked opponents this season, defeating the Blue Jays, No. 1 Messiah on Sept. 13 and No. 17 Swarthmore last Saturday. McDaniel is unbeaten in five of its last seven regular season games against ranked opponents, posting a 3-2-2 record in 2022 and 2023.
Amazingly, the win was also the first in the series for the Green Terror since a 3-2 victory at home, seven years ago on Oct. 25, 2016.
Meanwhile, it was the first conference loss for Johns Hopkins since a 3-2 setback on the road at Gettysburg on Oct. 30, 2019, ending a 30-game unbeaten streak.
The Blue Jays (12-2-2, 8-1-1 CC) held an 8-3 edge in shots in the first half, but junior
Lauren Hoolahan kept the game scoreless as she totaled four of her five saves in the opening 45 minutes. Her counterpart, Eva Breiland had one first-half stop.
After Hoolahan recorded her fifth save in the 48th minute, McDaniel recorded back-to-back corner kicks before LeChard sent a left-footed strike into the upper left corner from the top of the box off a centering pass from junior
Jessica Weinoldt.
All three of LeChard's goals have been game-winners this season against Hopkins, Kean and Washington College. She is second on the team with three goals this season while Weinoldt leads the team with 10 points, all of which have come in the last nine games.
The Blue Jays took seven more shots in the second half, but thanks the Green Terror defense, only five of their 15 attempts in the game were on goal. Hopkins also held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks, but only three resulted in shots with two going wide and the other saved by Hoolahan.
Heading into the regular-season finale on Saturday, McDaniel currently sits in fourth place in the conference standings. The top six teams advance to the 2023 Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Championship with third and fourth-place teams hosting a first round game on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
The Green Terror wrap up the regular season on Saturday against Muhlenberg on Senior Day. Prior to the game, the team will honor its 10 seniors. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. following the men's game against the Mules.
