ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Muhlenberg survived a late first-set comeback before distancing itself over the final two en route to a sweep over the McDaniel College volleyball team Saturday at Memorial Hall, 26-24, 25-11, 25-18.
The Green Terror (10-9, 1-5 CC) now sit two games out of the final spot in the 2023 Centennial Conference Volleyball Championship with four league games remaining.
Both teams found themselves leading early in the first set. With the Mules in front 7-5, McDaniel scored the next five-straight, including two on kills by sophomore
Kenzie Mitchell and junior
Angalyn Strouse. Senior
Nia Roberts kept them in the lead with two kills of her own to make it 15-14, but Muhlenberg responded with a 7-1 run to take a 21-16 lead.
From there, the Green Terror rallied back in front, 23-22, with another kill from Roberts, but the Mules took the set after scoring four of the final five points.
Muhlenberg (12-9, 2-5 CC) kept the momentum going into the second set with an early 7-3 lead before stretching it to nine, 15-6. McDaniel could not get closer than eight the rest of the way as the Mules won by 14.
The Green Terror responded in the third set with a pair of kills from freshman
Renita Bankole-Gibson, followed by another pair of kills from Mitchell as the set was tied at 12-12. Two kills by Strouse kept McDaniel in it at 16-13 and 20-14, but Muhlenberg started to pull away, but McDaniel couldn't get closer than six as the Mules closed out the match with a 25-18 victory.
Strouse finished with eight kills and five digs while junior
Kathy Taveras had while senior
Tatiana Hamilton totaled 13 assists and freshman
Hannah Waters added 10.
McDaniel returns home to face No. 9 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m.
