SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior
Jessica Weinoldt scored her fourth goal of the season and second game-winner to lift the McDaniel College women's team to a 1-0 road win over No. 17 Swarthmore Saturday at Clothier Field.
The Green Terror (8-2-5, 4-1-3 CC), ranked third in the latest NCAA Region V rankings, are now unbeaten in their last eight, posting a 5-0-3 record. Today also marked their second win over nationally-ranked opponent in as many games this season after they defeated No. 1 Messiah at home, 1-0 back on Sept. 13.
The Garnet out-shot McDaniel 23-7, but put just eight on goal, all of which were saved by junior
Lauren Hoolahan. Meanwhile, Weinoldt converted on the only shot on goal for the Green Terror.
Swarthmore (10-2-2, 6-1-1 CC) ranked 17th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll and sixth in the NCAA Region V rankings, had a few chances in the opening minutes, but Hoolahan made two saves in the first 11 minutes.
McDaniel found its rhythm and began pushing into Garnet territory. Graduate student
Kiersten Crowley got by her defender and ripped a shot in the 15th minute that deflected off the crossbar before senior
Allison Storm sent another shot just to the left of the goal one minute later.
In the 25th minute, Swarthmore broke through the back line and sent a shot towards the lower left corner, but Hoolahan reached out for her fourth save.
The Green Terror earned a free kick just over the midfield stripe in the 35th minute and Crowley lined up the ball and sent it deep into the box where Weinoldt got position and timed her jump perfectly, heading it past the keeper to put the visitors in front, 1-0.
Coming out of halftime, Swarthmore stepped up the pressure and had an early opportunity in the second half. Allie Zitelli connected on a shot, but Hoolahan was in position to make the save. Hoolahan finished with a career-high eight saves.
The Garnet had two more chances as time expired, but could not convert as McDaniel improved to 4-0-1 in the last five meetings in the series.
McDaniel returns home to face No. 8 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday at the Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
