Haverford Scores Late in Win Over Field Hockey on Senior Day

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Zoey Despines scored her first career goal off a penalty corner with 2:02 remaining to give Haverford a 1-0 victory over the McDaniel College field hockey team Saturday night at Gill Stadium.

The Green Terror (2-13, 0-8 CC) were limited to two first-quarter shots as the Fords out-shot them, 8-2. The visitors also held an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Following an uneventful first half in which the two teams combined for just five shots and three corners, Haverford was the aggressor in the second, out-shooting McDaniel 5-0 and totaling eight penalty corners.

However, the Fords (7-8, 2-6 CC) could not take advantage and the game headed to the final minutes still scoreless. That would change on the last corner and shot of the game as Despines took the feed from Erica Pardon, eluded a defender and sent a low angled shot that deflected off a defender's stick and into the back left corner. The game's lone goal came on the first and only shot on goal of the contest.

The Green Terror had its best two chances in the first five minutes as senior Kaylyn Jennings hit the post on the game's first shot before junior Tenley Pelot sent the rebound just wide to the left.

Freshman Lora Scarangello did not register a save for just the second time this season and first since the team's 2-1 win at Randolph-Macon in the season opener.

Holly Vincent recorded four of Haverford's eight shots.

Prior to the game, McDaniel honored its four seniors in Jennings, Yeseniah Ortiz, Olivia Vanreusel and Emma Legacy.

The Green Terror will conclude its 2023 season with back-to-back road games beginning on Wednesday when they head to Lancaster, Pa. to take on No. 22 Franklin & Marshall. Game time is at 4 p.m.
