GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Gettysburg pulled away late in the first set and used that momentum en route to a straight-set win over the McDaniel College volleyball team in a crucial Centennial Conference matchup Wednesday night at Bream Gymnasium.
The Green Terror (10-8, 1-4 CC) opened up the first set with a 3-1 lead, including a service ace from sophomore
Samantha Fadel. The Bullets quickly regained the lead, but McDaniel responded with a pair of kills from junior
Angalyn Strouse to jump back in front. Both teams traded points and McDaniel led 12-6, but Gettysburg rattled off eight-straight points, including four on service aces to go in front 14-12 before extending it en route to a 25-15 victory.
McDaniel rallied in the second and took a 6-2 advantage, but the Bullets rallied to tie the set at 9-9 before scoring five-straight to take a 14-9 advantage. They stretched their lead to as many 10, the last coming at 22-12. The Green Terror scored four of the next five points to pull within seven, but a kill by Izzy Lugar and McDaniel attack error gave Gettysburg a 25-16 win.
As the third set began, the Green Terror stayed within striking distance on a pair of kills from sophomore
Kenzie Mitchell and junior
Allyson Burgee as the set was tied at 8-8. Leading by three, 15-12, the Bullets scored five-straight to go in front, 20-12. Back-to-back kills by Mitchell pulled the visitors within six, but led by kills from three different players, Gettysburg scored five of the last seven points to seal the match, 25-16.
McDaniel had just 22 kills compared to 23 attack errors. Mitchell led the way with eight kills while Strouse and junior
Allyson Burgee added five. Fadel finished with three service aces, freshman
Hannah Waters had 11 assists and junior
Kathy Taveras totaled 14 digs. Freshman
Abigayle Bowley added three blocks.
The Green Terror travel to Muhlenberg on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against the Mules.
