Najera Scores First Goal in 2-2 Tie Against Gettysburg

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College men's soccer team held the lead twice, but Gettysburg responded both times, including the last on a penalty kick in 81st minute as the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie Wednesday at the Soccer Complex.

The Green Terror (4-5-5, 1-5-1 CC) are now unbeaten in six out of eight home games this season with three wins and three ties.

The Bullets pushed forward in the opening minutes as they attempted two shots that were just off target. McDaniel's first opportunity came in the 15th minute when sophomore Carver Neary got behind the defense and connected on a header that went off the crossbar and out of play.

In the 29th minute, junior Brandon Morse collected a loose ball outside the box, turned and dished it to freshman Charlie Olson who pivoted towards the goal with the defender on his back. He then ripped a shot past the keeper towards the lower corner to give McDaniel a 1-0 lead.

Trailing by one, the Bullets (4-7-3, 1-3-3 CC) put pressure on the McDaniel defense to start the second half. In the 63rd minute, sophomore Noah Rodriguez picked up a yellow card, setting up a free kick for the visitors. Gettysburg sent a long pass across the box to Michael Sack who chipped it forward into the box towards a cutting Chase Sempervive who headed it past graduate student Austin Heid to tie the game at 1-1.

McDaniel responded in the 76th minute on a long pass from sophomore AJ Nordone into the box where it bounced over a leaping Neary and past the keeper before sophomore Conor Najera finished it at the net for his first goal of the season.

However, 15 minutes later, the Bullets tied the game for the second time on a penalty kick from Aidan Muller.

Both teams attempted shots late in the half to try and break the deadlock, but could not convert. Heid made a clutch save with less than a minute left to keep the game tied at 2-2.

McDaniel travels to Swarthmore on Saturday for a 4 p.m. kickoff with the Garnet.
