Legacy Scores Team-Leading Fourth Against No. 3 Blue Jays

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College field hockey senior Emma Legacy scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in a 7-1 loss against No. 3 Johns Hopkins inside Kenneth R. Gill Stadium Wednesday night.

Legacy has scored four of the team's 10 goals this season, setting a new career in goals and points with nine.

The Blue Jays (13-1, 7-0 CC) led 1-0 after the first quarter thanks to a goal by Grace Waldeck just nine minutes in. The Green Terror limited the visitors to just four first-quarter shots and trailed by just one after one.

The top scoring offense in the Centennial Conference at almost three goals per game, came to life in the second, finding the back of the cage three times to take a commanding 4-0 lead into halftime. Waldeck tallied for the second while Siena Urbanski added two goals and one assist to finish the quarter with five points.

Hopkins held a 12-2 margin in shots in the first half and a 6-5 edge in penalty corners.

Despite trailing by four, McDaniel (2-12, 0-7 CC) matched the Blue Jays statistically in the second half as each team totaled four shots and five penalty corners. However, the nation's third-ranked team added three more goals, the last of which came just 45 seconds following Legacy's goal off a rebound in front.

Legacy's goal marked just the 10th allowed by the Blue Jays in 14 games this season as the team is currently ranked 10th in Division III in goals-against average.

Freshman Lora Scarangello finished with three saves for the Green Terror while junior Morgan Collins totaled three shots.

Phoebe Williams picked up her fourth win in five starts in goal this season as all three goalies saw action for Hopkins. Alexis Loder finished with three second-half saves while Mikayla Schoff added a defensive save.

McDaniel hosts Haverford in its final home game of the 2023 season on Saturday at 6 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its four seniors in Legacy, Yeseniah Ortiz, Kaylyn Jennings and Olivia Vanreusel.
