Moskunas Anchors Defense in Draw Against Salisbury

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College women's soccer team out-shot Salisbury 17-6 and registered their 10th shutout of the season in a scoreless draw Tuesday at the Soccer Complex.

The Green Terror (7-2-5), ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches Region V rankings, are unbeaten in their last seven. They are also currently ranked fourth in Division III with just four goals allowed this season.

After a back-and-forth first few minutes, McDaniel began to take control of possession and push into the Salisbury territory. In the 17th minute, graduate student Kiersten Crowley ripped a shot from just outside the box which was saved by the Sea Gulls' Riley Pinato.

Freshman Sidda Mitchell had an opportunity two minutes later, but was also denied by Pinato. Other than a shot in the 12th minute, the Green Terror locked up the Salisbury offense in the first half, keeping the visitors off the board.

As the second half began, McDaniel kept up the pressure with an early attempt from junior Jessica Weinoldt that was saved by Pinato.

In the 64th minute, senior Elaina Kluttz took a shot the was saved before Weinoldt came in with a header one minute later that was saved by Pinto.

McDaniel earned 12 corner kicks on the afternoon and continued to control possession all over the field. The back line of Crowley, senior Allison Storm, freshman Peyton Viggiano, and junior Olivia Moskunas held the Salisbury offense in check over the full 90 minutes.

The Green Terror had two late scoring chances. The first came when Storm lined up a free kick 25 yards out that she sent just over the crossbar. With time running out, Kluttz beat her defender down the left sideline and ripped a shot to the near corner that was deflected out of play by Pinato to keep the scoreless draw intact.

Pinato finished with a career-high nine saves for the Sea Gulls (9-4-2) in the first meeting between the two teams since Sept. 10, 1994.

McDaniel returns to action on Saturday at Swarthmore. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
