WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior
Elaina Kluttz scored her first goal of the season to seal a 2-0 win for the McDaniel College women's soccer team Wednesday against Washington College at the Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Green Terror (6-2-4, 2-1-3 CC) moved into the sixth and final spot in the 2023 Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Championship, flipping places with the Shorewomen. McDaniel has four conference contests remaining with games against Haverford, No. 18 Swarthmore, No. 9 Johns Hopkins, Muhlenberg. Hopkins and Muhlenberg are back-to-back to finish the regular season.
The Green Terror controlled the pace of play early, holding an 8-1 advantage in shots in the first half and a 6-1 margin in penalty corners.
After a shot by Washington (5-4-3, 2-3-1 CC) went wide in the opening minute of play, McDaniel totaled the next four along with four corner kicks before breaking through in the 27th minute. Following a flurry of four consecutive shots, junior
Liz LeChard slotted home a rebound for her second goal of the season and second game-winner.
The Green Terror looked to double their advantage heading into the half with LeChard and sophomore
Bayleigh Purdue putting back-to-back shots on goal in the final minute, but both were turned away by Shorewomen keeper Olivia Allen.
Allen finished with three saves after entering in relief of starter Hailey Sharpe in the 30th minute.
Washington was the aggressor to start the second half, totaling three shots in the first five minutes with junior
Lauren Hoolahan making one save before McDaniel turned the tables, recording three shots of its own with Kluttz driving home her first of the year and first since she netted the game-winner in the 86th minute of a 2-1 win at Swarthmore on Oct. 2, 2021.
The Green Terror defense limited the Shorewomen to just two more shots over the final 32 minutes with Hoolahan turning away both to finish with three saves and her seventh shutout in 12 starts this season.
McDaniel travels to Haverford on Saturday for a noon kickoff from Walton Field. The Fords posted a 1-0 win at home a year ago and have won the last two meetings at home against the Green Terror.
