Three Second-Half Goals Carry Gettysburg Past Field Hockey

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - After a scoreless first half, Gettysburg scored two goals on three third-quarter shots en route to a 3-0 victory over the McDaniel College field hockey team Wednesday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

The Green Terror (2-10, 0-5 CC) were limited to just three shots, including one in the second half, but did equal the Bullets in number of penalty corners, 8-8.

Freshman Lora Scarangello stopped three of the five shots she faced in the first half with all three coming consecutively late in the second quarter to keep the game scoreless.

McDaniel had two quality chances in the second off two penalty corners, but shots by junior Morgan Collins and senior Olivia Vanruesel were blocked, the last of which came with just 50 seconds remaining in the half.

The Green Terror continued that momentum to start the third quarter, earning three-straight corners in the first five minutes. However, they did not generate any shots before Gettysburg converted its first opportunity less than two minutes later as Jillian Somers scored with a shot off Scarangello's pad to the back post.

The Bullets (4-7, 1-5 CC) would make it 2-for-2 in the third when Hailey Rhine scored off an assist from Gaby Markunas on the team's second penalty corner of the quarter with just six seconds remaining.

The fourth quarter saw both teams take only one shot, but Gettysburg converted on its lone attempt with 6:26 to play as Alex Wenz scored her first goal of the season when she redirected a long hit by Morgan Cherry.

Once again, McDaniel applied pressure early, earning two penalty corners which resulted in another shot by Collins that required Emilia Saccento to make her lone save of the game for the Bullets.

The Green Terror continue their brief two-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Muhlenberg. Game time is at 3 p.m. from Scotty Wood Stadium.
