WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College women's basketball team outscored Muhlenberg 22-7 in the fourth quarter as the Green Terror won their fourth-straight with a 69-48 victory over Muhlenberg Saturday on Rebecca L. Martin Court.
McDaniel (6-5, 4-2 CC), whose four-game win streak is its longest since the start of the 2018-19 season, was led by 22 points from freshman
Elaina Beckett and a season-high 12 from sophomore
Liliana Overcash.
Both teams found their rhythm early in the first quarter. Freshman
Jordan McLean got on the board with a midrange jump shot from the baseline to take a 4-0 lead. The Mules kept pace with multiple baskets by Emily Unger and the score was tied up at 14-14.
To close out the period, Beckett caught a pass from Overcash
and connected on a short jumper, followed by a pair of made free throws and the Green Terror were up by two heading into the second period.Â
Unger gave Muhlenberg their first lead of the game with a deep three-pointer to open up the second quarter. Graduate studentÂ
Meggie Burgess responded for McDaniel with a turnaround from the post to retake the lead. Burgess finished with eight points and eight boards off the bench. McLean kept attacking and scored back-to-back buckets to give the Green Terror a 26-23 lead.
As the half came to a close, Overcash connected from deep to push the lead to five. The Mules scored the next four points and were trailing 31-30 heading to the locker room.
In a defensive third quarter, the Mules jumped out to a three-point lead. After a pair of free-throws from Overcash, juniorÂ
Justeen Cooley checked in from the bench and hit a big three for the Green Terror. The Mules came back down the court, but seniorÂ
Mallory Conroy came across the paint and swatted away a layup from Margeaux Eripret. McDaniel pushed the ball back down the court and Overcash found an open Beckett who converted a three-pointer to build the Green Terror lead back up to five.
As time expired, McLean drove to the basket and drew a foul with less than a second left in the quarter. She made both free-throws and put McDaniel up 47-41.
As the fourth quarter began, Beckett
got to the line on back-to-back possessions and the Green Terror took off from there. SeniorÂ
Josey Klingenberg splashed one in from behind the arc and Beckett followed that up with a triple of their own to expand the lead. The McDaniel defense locked down the Mules and held them to seven total points in the final quarter.Â
McDaniel returns to action Tuesday at Haverford. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
