Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beckett's Buzzer Beater Tops Swarthmore, 46-44

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - A buzzer beater by McDaniel College women's basketball freshman Elaina Beckett led the Green Terror to a 46-44 Centennial Conference road victory Wednesday night at Swarthmore.

Beckett finished with her sixth double and third-straight as McDaniel (5-5, 3-2 CC) won its third-straight and snapped a four-game losing streak against the Garnet.

The Green Terror got off to a hot start behind eight points from Beckett in the first quarter, but Swarthmore (4-6, 2-3 CC) was able to keep pace with a balanced offensive attack and the game was tied at 14-14 after one.

Both teams exchanged baskets to start the second before a layup by senior Mallory Conroy regained the lead for the visitors. A steal by senior Josey Klingenberg who dished it to Beckett stretched the lead to five before the Garnet pulled within two at halftime, 24-22.

McDaniel found their rhythm early in the second half as baskets by Conroy and freshman Jordan McLean gave the Green Terror its largest lead at seven, 29-22. However, Swarthmore outscored McDaniel 13-8 over the final seven minutes and took a 35-32 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair that featured three ties and three lead changes. After a three-pointer by graduate student Meggie Burgess gave McDaniel a 41-39 advantage with 2:28 left, the Garnet responded with back-to-back baskets, the last of which coming on a three-pointer by Alyssa Hayashi to put Swarthmore in front by three, 44-41, with 1:16 remaining.

Nonetheless, the Green Terror answered on their next possession as Klingenberg nailed her only field goal of the game to tie the game for the seventh time with just 34 seconds to play.

From there, it was all Beckett. After a block and defensive rebound on the Garnet's final possession gave her a double double, she totaled her fourth offensive rebound off her own miss with three seconds left before scoring on the put back to give McDaniel its first win in the last three games at Tarble Pavilion.

Klingenberg finished with three points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Conroy totaled 10 points and seven rebounds.

McDaniel returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Muhlenberg at 2 p.m. on Rebecca L. Martin Court.
