ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The McDaniel College women's basketball team battled back multiple times against Muhlenberg, but could not overcome the Mules on the road, falling 54-46 Tuesday.
The Green Terror (6-11, 4-8 CC) was led by 14 points from graduate student
Meggie Burgess, one shy of her season-high. Junior
Liliana Overcash added a career-high 13 points.
Emily Unger scored seven of the first 12 points to put Muhlenberg in front 12-2 before Overcash hit a pair of jumpers as McDaniel started to mount a comeback.
With 2:43 remaining in the first quarter, Burgess connected on two free-throws. A few possessions later, freshman
Jordan McLean grabbed a defensive rebound and passed it ahead to freshman
Elaina Beckett who dished it back to McLean for a pull-up jumper on the break to cut into the Mules lead.
The Green Terror defense held the Mules to just one point for the rest of the quarter and they trailed 19-14 after one.
McDaniel kept the offense rolling into the second quarter with Burgess scoring the team's first seven points to close the deficit to four. The stingy defense surrendered just nine points while graduate student
Julia Ryan found senior
Mallory Conroy in the post for a layup to pull the team within two with 1:17 left.
Leading 28-25 at the half, the Mules built the lead back up to eight early in the third. Ryan tallied another assist to Beckett before Burgess followed that up with a pair of free throws. With 2:30 to play, Ryan found Beckett again to draw the Green Terror within one.
However, two possessions later, Muhlenberg (8-9, 7-5 CC) came up with a steal and Emily Vaughan finished at the other end to put the Mules back ahead by three.
Muhlenberg kept the momentum going into the fourth, outscoring McDaniel 17-10. With just under four minutes remaining, Overcash hit a contested floater in the lane for her 13th point of the game, but that was as close as the Green Terror would get.
McDaniel returns to action at Dickinson on Thursday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
