Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rally Comes Up Short as Women Fall at Ursinus, 54-52

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The McDaniel College women's basketball team battled back from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit, but two free throws with 0.9 seconds remaining gave Ursinus a 54-52 win Saturday at Hellferich Hall.

The Green Terror (6-10, 4-7 CC) were led by freshman Elaina Beckett who totaled her eighth double double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Lilana Overcash added 11 points, one shy of her season high.

Trailing by 11 entering the fourth quarter, the McDaniel offense went to work with a balanced scoring attack. Graduate student Julia Ryan connected on a long two-pointer, followed by a triple from Overcash. Halfway through the period, Ursinus had managed just two points and could not find a hole in the stout McDaniel defense.

A mid-range jumper by senior Mallory Conroy tied the game at 46-46 with 4:54 remaining.

Both teams traded baskets until the Bears (7-9, 4-7 CC) built a four-point lead. Overcash and Beckett kept the Green Terror in range as the clock went under two minutes.

With 1:04 remaining, Conroy intercepted a pass and finished at the other end to tie the game again, 52-52. After a steal by senior Josey Klingenberg, McDaniel had the ball with the shot clock turned off.

However, Ursinus came up with a loose ball before a foul sent the Bears to the free throw line with just 0.9 seconds left. Madison Smith made both free throw attempts as they Bears posted their fourth-straight win over the Green Terror at home.

Led Chinwe Irondi who scored six of her 10 points in the first quarter, Ursinus jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one.

The Bears led 29-23 at halftime before a 6-0 run by the Green Terror tied the game at 31-31 with 5:57 to play in the third. Natalie Mehl, the Bears leading scorer with 17 points, tallied 10-straight points to end the quarter with Ursinus in front by eight.

Freshman Jordan McLean finished with seven points and six rebounds.

McDaniel returns to action on Tuesday at Muhlenberg. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
