LANCASTER, Pa. - The McDaniel College women's basketball team led by as many as seven in the first quarter, but Franklin & Marshall rallied over the final three quarters en route to a 62-53 victory Saturday.
The Green Terror (6-8, 4-5 CC) were led by 15 points from graduate student
Meggie Burgess and the seventh double double from freshman
Elaina Beckett who had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The back-and-forth contest featured six ties and seven lead changes, including two ties and four lead changes in the fourth quarter. However, the Diplomats (6-8, 3-6 CC) outscored McDaniel by six in the fourth, 24-18, scoring 13 of their 24 points from the free throw line where they were 13-for-15.
For the game, Franklin & Marshall was 28-of-39 from the free throw line which help overcome the team's 29.6 percent field goal shooting.
The Green Terror (6-8, 4-5 CC) jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the game's first eight minutes behind four points each from Burgess and Beckett. The Diplomats closed the first quarter with four consecutive free throws to cut their deficit to three after one, 12-9.
A second-chance jump shot by senior
Julia Ryan pushed the Green Terror back to six in the second, but Franklin & Marshall closed the half on an 11-5 run to tie the game at 23-23. Ryan totaled five of her seven points in the second quarter. She finished the game with seven points, six rebounds and four assists.
Neither team led by more than three in the third as senior
Mallory Conroy led the McDaniel offense with six of its 12 points. She finished the game with eight before fouling out in the fourth. The Green Terror had three players foul out and five commit at least four fouls.
Sophomore
Liliana Overcash had eight points, three rebounds and three assists, including four points and two assists in the fourth quarter.
McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 when it hosts Washington College at 6 p.m. on Rebecca L. Martin Court.
