Field Hockey Falls in Overtime at Stevenson, 2-1

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Macy Kosanovich scored 4:35 into the first overtime to lift Stevenson to a 2-1 victory over the McDaniel College field hockey team on Wednesday at Owings Mills East.

The game marked the second-straight decided by one goal for the Green Terror (2-1). It was also the sixth one-goal game in 11 meetings against the Mustangs dating back to 2009. McDaniel is now 4-2 in those games.

The two teams combined for just four shots in the opening 30 minutes, with McDaniel taking three, and the game was scoreless at the half.

However, Stevenson (3-1) managed to break through just over eight minutes into the third quarter, finding the back of the cage on its fourth shot of the quarter when Meghan Huey scored off a rebound on a save by sophomore Amy Richenderfer.

Huey's goal marked the first allowed by the Green Terror this season, snapping a scoreless streak of 178 minutes

Normally a defender, Richenderfer made her first career start in goal in place of junior Mikayla Smith who was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

The Mustangs maintained their 1-0 lead after three quarters thanks to a 5-1 advantage in shots in the period.

McDaniel would get the equalizer midway through the fourth when leading scorer, sophomore Tenley Pelot, sent the ball forward into the circle where freshman Dillan Williams redirected it past the goalie for her first career goal with 7:06 remaining in regulation.

The Green Terror had three more shots in the quarter, but couldn't tally a second score as Stevenson's Jamie Fritz came up with stops on both shots on goal. McDaniel outshot the Mustangs, 4-0, in the fourth.

Kosanovich would net the game-winning goal when she corralled the loose ball after her first shot was blocked and she slid it past Richenderfer inside the far post.

Each team took eight shots and four penalty corners in the contest. Richenderfer made one save in the third quarter while Pelot picked up her seventh point of the season with her first assist.

The Green Terror host Elizabethtown on Saturday at Gill Stadium. Game time is at 1 p.m.
