Paulson Scores Lone Goal in 1-0 Win Over Elizabethtown

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College field hockey sophomore Emily Paulson scored the game's only goal 4:36 into the second quarter to give the Green Terror a 1-0 victory over Elizabethtown Saturday at Gill Stadium.

With wins in three of its first four games, McDaniel (3-1) is off to its best start since the 2015 season when the team began the year with five consecutive victories.

After a scoreless first quarter in which both teams registered two shots each, the Green Terror held a 10-2 advantage in the second with Paulson scoring the game-winning goal with 10:24 remaining. She tallied the fourth goal of her career, and her first game-winner, on the team's fourth shot of the quarter following a flurry of activity in front the of the Blue Jay goal.

Paulson began the play by inserting a penalty corner which led to back-to-back shots by junior Olivia Vanreusel and freshman Dillan Williams. She then corralled the loose ball off a save by the keeper and slid it into the open cage.

McDaniel continued the pressure over the final five minutes of the period with three penalty corners and six more shots, two of which were saved by Murphy and third that was cleared off the line on a defensive save by Maeve Keeney.

The Green Terror outshot Elizabethtown, 6-0, in the third quarter and held a 5-1 margin in corners, but couldn't add to their lead as Murphy totaled three more saves.

Murphy finished with eight saves for the Blue Jays (2-2) while junior and reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Mikayla Smith, had four for McDaniel to remain unbeaten in three starts this season.

McDaniel looks for its third-straight win at home on Tuesday when it welcomes Wilson to Gill Stadium for a 7 p.m. start. The Phoenix won last year's meeting, 2-0, in Chambersburg, Pa.
