Late Heroics Keep Field Hockey Unbeaten at Home

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College field hockey freshman Dillan Williams scored the game-winning goal just 3:17 into overtime as the Green Terror posted a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Wilson Tuesday night at Gill Stadium.

Off to its best start since 2015, McDaniel (4-1) has already surpassed its win total from each of the last two seasons and improved to 3-0 at home. The team is also 3-1 in games decided by one goal this year.

Despite outshooting the Phoenix 19-8, the Green Terror trailed for most of the contest after Wilson scored the game's first goal with 12:48 remaining in the second quarter on Emma Bounds' team-leading fourth goal of the season.

McDaniel took twice as many shots as the Phoenix through three quarters, 12-6, but still trailed by one. However, the Green Terror turned up the pressure in the final two minutes, totaling five shots while forcing four penalty corners, the last of which came with just four seconds left in regulation, their 12th of the night.

After back-to-back shots by Williams and sophomore Tenley Pelot, junior Emma Legacy controlled the rebound and touched it forward to sophomore Amy Richenderfer who sent it across the goal line to the far right corner, tying the game at 1-1 after time had expired.

It was Richenderfer's first goal of the season and third of her career, sending the team to overtime for the third time in five games this season.

It didn't take long for Williams to strike as she scored on the first shot of the extra period, giving McDaniel its second win in three overtime games this year.

Meanwhile, junior Mikayla Smith earned her fourth win in as many starts this season. She extended her shutout streak to 217:12 before allowing her first goal of the season in the second quarter. She now boasts a 0.23 goals-against average and a .957 saves percentage after making six more saves tonight.

Through five games, the Green Terror are averaging 15 shots and nine penalty corners per game.

McDaniel faces its biggest challenge of the season on Saturday when the team travels to No. 6 Salisbury for a 6 p.m. contest at Sea Gull Stadium.
