Carstensen comes up big in draw against Defending Champs

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - In a tightly contested matchup between a pair of ranked teams, the Green Terror defense came up with crucial stops all afternoon against the defending national champions.

The 19th-ranked Green Terror (0-1-1) came out of the gate with renewed energy and focus against the Captains (Ranked #1). Allison Storm found space early and ripped one toward the corner, which was saved by Captains goal keeper Abby Ochs.

Christopher Newport responded and began attacking the McDaniel back line. After a pair of off-target shots, Katherine Carstensen made her first of six saves on the day on a low line drive from the Captains' Emma Ricci. Both defense kept up the pressure as time expired on a scoreless first half.

Early in the second half, McDaniel had two opportunities. Senior Taylor Clawson placed a shot in the right corner, but Ochs reached out and made the save. Just a few minutes later Jessica Weinoldt corralled a cross deep in the box and took a shot which was saved again. McDaniel's offense had two other opportunities in the second half for a total of seven shots on the day.

The Christopher Newport offense had a few early chances in the second half, but the stout McDaniel back line led by seniors Jules Dotterweich and Kiersten Crowley kept the Captains in check not allowing a shot in the final 25 minutes of action.

McDaniel returns to the field on Thursday at Randolph-Macon. The matchup is currently scheduled for 5 p.m.
