WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College women's soccer team capitalized twice in the first half to post a 2-0 non-conference victory over Catholic Wednesday at the Soccer Complex.
The Green Terror (5-2-2) posted their sixth-straight regular season win at home, all of which have come by shutout. Over that span, the team has outscored its opponents, 16-0.
As the game began, McDaniel attacked the Cardinal defense and created plenty of scoring opportunities. Just over two minutes into the game, sophomoreÂ
Jessica Weinoldt took a shot at the top of the box and put it just over the cross bar.
Three minutes later, graduate student
Jessie Titus found an opening, but her shot went wide.
After an early barrage by the Green Terror, Catholic (1-6-2) settled into the game, but junior
Ashley Thomas and senior
Kiersten Crowley beat them to the ball on multiple long passes. Over a four-minute stretch, the Cardinals created two of their best scoring opportunities with two shots, but graduate studentÂ
Katherine Carstensen was in position to make both saves.
In the 20th minute, seniorÂ
Taylor Clawson beat her defender and found freshmanÂ
Abby Witzel open at the six-yard line where she took possession and placed it in the back of the net for the first goal of the game and her second on the year.
McDaniel continued to press forward and seniorÂ
Taylor Clawson got a step on her defender down the right side before crossing the ball into the box where Weinoldt corralled it and took a shot that was blocked. Sophomore
Elizabeth LeChard was there for the rebound and slotted it home to extend the McDaniel lead.
The Green Terror doubled up Catholic with 18 shots on the afternoon while adding eight corners.
As the second half continued, the Cardinals got behind the Green Terror defense and had a breakaway opportunity, but
Carstensen stayed on her line and made the save to keep the shutout alive.
McDaniel held firm the rest of the way to extend their home shutout streak to 540 minutes.
The Green Terror return to action on Saturday when they host Swarthmore in a regional battle scheduled for 11 a.m. McDaniel is currently ranked fourth in the Region V rankings while the Garnet are fifth.
