WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Green Terror scored in the first half and created plenty of chances late in a draw against the Garnet on homecoming.
Heavy rain came down just as the match was about to begin on a cold day in Westminster. In the opening minutes McDaniel went on the offensive. With 11 minutes gone by, sophomore midfielder
Jessica Weinoldt took a shot, but Garnet keeper Nora Greer got in position and made the save.Â
A few minutes later
Abby Witzel found an opening and connected on a ball that went just over the crossbar. As field conditions continued to worsen Swarthmore was able to move the ball forward and attempt a pair of shots as well, but neither were on target.
Jules Dotterweich anchored the back line for McDaniel along with
Kiersten Crowley,
Olivia Moskunas, and
Ashley Thomas. Together they held the Garnet without a corner kick on the day.Â
With 25 minutes gone by, the Green Terror continued to find openings in the Garnet defense.
Witzel and
Elizabeth LeChard both attempted shots that were narrowly saved by the Swarthmore goal keeper.Â
In the 36th minute, the Garnet mustered their only goal of the afternoon when Abby Chang found Anwyn Urquhart who connected to take the early 1-0 lead.Â
McDaniel responded quickly, with just under seven minutes left in the half
Jessica Weinoldt took possession near midfield. She played a perfect through ball to
Taylor Clawson down the right side.
Clawson stepped up in stride and blasted it past the outstretched arms of the Garnet keeper to tie the game up.Â
With the scored tied coming out of the locker room, McDaniel kept pressing forward and found a nice rhythm offensively. In the span of two minutes the Green Terror peppered the Garnet keeper with three shots, but could not find the back of the net.Â
In the 67th minute
Jessie Titus found an opening in the Swarthmore defense and attempted a shot that sailed to the right of the goal. McDaniel kept the ball in the Garnet third of the field for most of the second have other than a few chances by Swarthmore. Graduate student goalie
Katherine Carstensen tallied four saves on the day including a clutch stop in the 84th minute to preserve the draw.
McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday at #23 Franklin & Marshall. The match is scheduled for 7 P.M.
