BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The McDaniel College women's soccer team scored twice on the road against Bryn Mawr to stay unbeaten in the Centennial Conference with a 2-0 victory over the Owls on Saturday at Applebee Field.
The Green Terror (4-2-2, 3-0-0 CC) applied pressure early in a physical first half as both teams tallied four fouls. In the eighth minute, freshman
Abby Witzel found an opening and took a shot that was saved by the Bryn Mawr goalkeeper. A few minutes later, senior
Taylor Clawson connected on a header, but the keeper was in position for another save.
McDaniel kept up the offensive pressure and outshot the Owls in the first half, 14-2.
Senior
Kiersten Crowley and junior
Elaina Kluttz both attempted shots in the 26th minute, but neither could find the back of the net.
In the 38th minute, junior
Keyla Velasquez received the ball deep in the box and drew a foul to set up a penalty kick. Graduate student
Jules Dotterweich stepped up to take the shot and calmly took a few steps back, analyzed the situation and sent a low line drive into the left corner for the first goal of the game and her first of the season.
Just a few minutes later, McDaniel earned one of its eight corner kicks on the day. Junior
Allison Storm took the kick and sent the ball into the box at the six where the goalkeeper jumped up and punched it away, but Velasquez read the ball in the air and headed into the back of the net.
The Green Terror led 2-0 at the break.
As the second half began, McDaniel continued to create scoring opportunities, launching three shots on goal in the span of two minutes. Lucy Heyman stopped all three shots en route to 11 saves on the day for the Owls (0-6-2, 0-3-1 CC).
The Green Terror defense posted another clean sheet as they allowed just four shots and no corner kicks as the team secured its fourth win of the season.
McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts a non-conference contest versus Catholic at 4 p.m.
