Field Hockey Falls to Haverford in Conference Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Dalia Bercow scored midway through the second quarter for the game's only goal as Haverford posted a 1-0 victory over the McDaniel College field hockey team Saturday at Gill Stadium in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

The Green Terror (4-3, 0-1 CC) fell for the first time in four home games this season. All four games have been decided by one goal, including two of the last three in overtime.

McDaniel could not find the back of the cage in the first quarter despite outshooting the Fords 3-0 and holding a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners. The Green Terror's best opportunity came with 2:39 remaining when a shot by senior Amanda Sponaugle hit the post before a follow up by junior Yeseniah Ortiz was saved by Haverford's Mary Smith, her only one of the game.

The Fords (3-4, 1-0 CC) capitalized as they outshot McDaniel 6-0 in the second and had four penalty corners. Vercow scored the first goal of the game and her first of the season with 7:12 to play off an assist from Olivia Ahart on the team's first penalty corner of quarter.

The second half was all Haverford as it totaled another six shots and had six penalty corners while holding the Green Terror without a shot and just one corner. However, the McDaniel defense managed to avoid a second tally as junior Mikayla Smith, who had three saves in the second quarter, added two more in the third to finish the game with five.

The Green Terror were issued two green cards and one yellow as they suffered their second-straight shutout loss.

McDaniel continues Centennial Conference play on Wednesday as they stay in-state to take on Washington College on the road. Game time is at 7 p.m.
